1. Sue Mc - to friends for a perfect weekend of sea-Doing, companionship and great weather. 2. Tim - thank goodness we got our daughter moved into Humber College safe and soundly! 3. Gloria - thanks to Susan for the wonderful assortment of pictures from Rib-fest! Enjoy them on the web site. 4. Harry- happy or sad he thanked his lucky stars for the opportunity to enjoy the air show with his son from the Soo and his grandson. The only difficulty was the oppressive heat. Did you know Harry had his knee cap burned right through his pants? Ross Metcalf was overheard saying that he was lucky he never had his back to the show or something else may have been burned! 5. Apologies to all. A correction is required for Ted Watson's announcement. It was Al Cole's widow that was married. Al was an outstanding Rotarian who passed away over ten years ago. |

Bowmansville Rotary was visited today by Chris Bovie representing the Whitby Mental Health Centre and was introduced by Doug Park. Chris gave the group a very informative power point presentation. The following points of information were noted: · Whitby mental Health serves over 3 million people · Since 1919 the original Psychiatric facility sat upon 640 acres of lakeshore property. It was dotted with cottages, out buildings and an admin centre. The clients performed agricultural tasks along wit the staff making it almost self sufficient · This has all changed. In 1996 the current modern facility was built and all o f the former buildings save a few were demolished · The current facility has functional therapy spaces, pool, gym, lakeshore view and walkways, · Employs 1200 people and has 329 beds · It has a Conference centre and lecture theatre and focused on building partnerships with the community at large · The original site was purchased by Ontario land develop Corporation. Currently it is developing condominiums on bordering property creating challenges for integration of that site while dealing with the expanding needs of the facility itself. · Whitby mental health provides programs in five main areas- 1. Adolescent and Young adults (including coping skills and anger management) 2. Forensics program 3. Special services (seniors, dentures) 4. Assessment for Re-Integration 5. Integrated health Skills · The centre deals with more complex mental health issues ; works cooperatively with the police services; · The core values driving all initiatives and services are based upon Excellence, Innovation, Safety, Respect and Fostering Community Partnerships · The staff is involved in Community events, Developing Award winning programs, encouraging community use of facilities, starting a speaker program in the fall, organizing delegation visits to "see what and how we do things!" · Trends in mental health that are evident- greater need than ever before; big system changes; greater focus on recovery; more government attention than in the 1990's · What does this mean for the Centre? We are looking at becoming a Teaching Facility: affiliated with a University; challenged by the physical limitations of the facility itself; able to address the growing demand by expending into the community in other ways i.e. satellite offices/faculties Chris was thanked by Steve Code for the presentation and informative Q/A portion! |
