Happy Bucks

1. Bob Stevens paid a buck to let us know how put out he was that Brett G would have a sign at his new shop that read "Older Adults Shot for Free".

2. Don Hutton parted with a buck to let us all know the foursome he played with at a recent Hospital Benefit Golf Tournament tied for first. Bravo. Then they lost out with the tie breaking question. Too bad. We all still love you Don!

3. Brian Bontje flipped a buck into the can and publically thanked Sue Mc for all of her hard work in helping to make our Annual Golf Tournament a great success this year.

4. Brett had the official opening four and one half months after the fire. He contributed $4.50 to the pot as a significant gesture. Congrats to Brett and his staff.

5. Renee had a sad buck and informed us that our new novitiate Linda Vianale will be unable to attend for a couple of weeks as she severed her finger "to the bone" during a recent volleyball game. We all wish you a speedy recovery.

6. Dennis was pleased to announce that Hospital Fund was boosted by $33,000 recently at the St. Mary cement Open House.

7. Sue and Dennis both reported that Ross is recovering nicely at home after his surgery. Ross will be away for a 6 week medical leave.

Rotarians in the Spotlight - Chuck Cattran and Angie Darlison

Chuck Cattran joined Rotary September 1, 1969. In his 37 years as a Rotarian he has been an asset to the club, to the community and to all of the new members that he has mentored during that time.

Angie Darlison joined Rotary one year ago on September 25th. She has been a tireless worker for the club and sets a fine example for young women in our community for the 21st Century.

Many thanks from all of your friends at Rotary for your efforts. They will always be appreciated.

Club Assembly

Sherry Smith dropped by to give us a quick reminder and review of what he Community Living project was all about. She was introduced by Kevin and her information was both informative and thought provoking. The Club believes strongly in keeping money in the community, while never losing sight of the fact that we are part of Rotary International.

From Sherry's presentation we learned the following:
1. Community Living assists 450 special needs adults; 22 group homes in the region; 2 group homes specifically in Clarington
2. They require funds to maintain these residences- currently for repairs and renovations i.e. plumbing, foundations, driveways, painting, doors, roof repairs and replacement, health and safety updating, accessibility.
3. High needs people require a great deal of supervision, some even 24/7.
4. Their goal is to raise $360,000 WOW! They sure could use any help that was available.
5. The "Official Campaign" will be launched November 1st.

The question was asked "Would our club consider adopting a group home and supporting it through our Special Needs and Community Concerns Committees?"

Rotarians kindly refer to the excellent brochure provided by Sherry for specific information.

Thanks to Sherry and all of her staff that do such a wonderful job assisting these adults with the challenges they face everyday and we take for granted.

During the Club Assembly President Denis did great job navigating us through several topics for discussions and consideration. Namely:

1. Rotary International Foundation - balancing the funds raised between local community and International Projects

2. Membership issue - consider this for a goal: for every member lost we should sign up two! Steve code has already three potential novitiates lined up with his committee

3. On Leave of absence: Ross M medical; Shelly Allin - until January '09; Ted W - Medical for 6 months; Geoff S will be returning - perhaps a call from president Denis would provides us with a definite date. In the meantime we'll look forward to seeing everyone back in action as soon as they are willing and able. Good luck.

4. Denis announced that HDRC money was in the order of $5600 to pay for respite care

5. The Adopt Road (Liberty and Westside Drive) Challenge is currently organized. Contact Brian Bontje and Committee members to sign up. The event will take place on October 1 Sunday at 1:00 pm meet at Hyundai

6. Renee made a special request of the club for $5,000 to assist a couple in a tough situation. They require renovations to their home. The wife has MS and is unable to function without them preventing her from having a decent quality of life. Can Rotary of Bowmanville support this?
