Happy Bucks

1. Lyle Goodin paid a buck to let us know that he is celebrating 36 years of wedded bliss. They just returned from spending a fabulous two weeks in Italy.

2. Sue Mc reports that Ross M is doing well. After her visit on the weekend she determined that Ross was well enough to compose a couple of songs to take to Scotland when she goes over to join the Gold exchange program this year. Wait a go Ross. We're pullin' for you!

3. Kevin had a sad buck for the fact that out speaker for Remembrance Day has been given his marching orders to leave for Bosnia November 8. Our prayers and wishes for a safe tour of duty go with the good Colonel. "God's speed!"

4. This is a good one- Dennis arrived at the Regina airport to fly home only to discover that the flight had been cancelled over a month ago. His carrier hadn't notified him. Upon calling him on the cell phone things were quickly resolved and the 'prez' arrived home safe a sound by midnight to be picked up by his lovely wife. Lucky fellow, eh?

Rotarians in the Spotlight - Tim Funchion and Don Gleed

Tim Funchion became a Rotarian in September 27, 2001. Quickly rising to the top, this dedicated soul ended up being the longest serving President in the history of the Club. During his time with us he has dedicated hundreds of hours of service to the community and the club.

Don Gleed joined Rotary September 30, 2004 and quickly presented himself as hard worker, analytical thinker and truly an outstanding addition to our club.

Thanks "fellas" for all that you have done from all of your colleagues at Bowmanville. No wonder your mother's love you so much!

Guest Speaker - Gord Miller

Environmental Commissioner Gord Miller
Gord Miller, Ontario Environmental Commissioner makes a point while speaking to the club

Gord Miller and Denis Beaulieu
Gord Miller signs a book for our literacy program.

Lyle Goodin was sweating in a cool collected manner and finally Gord Miller, Environment Commissioner of Ontario, arrived. He was able to introduce him and after 10 minutes of that permitted him to give his presentation. You had to be there to get that one!

Gord Miller "speaks for the trees". Think about it. He is an officer of the legislature with no particular political affiliation. He was appointed by the former PC sitting legislature originally and this current sitting Liberal House reappointed Gord just recently Commissioner Miller functions as an ombudsman and coordinates the activities ensuring the environmental impact that 15 ministries may have upon the environment is minimized and falls within current protocols and guidelines. In addition he reports to the legislature yearly, and addresses public concerns in areas throughout the province.

His presentation enlightened everyone in the room. Gord hit upon the following areas with interesting information and statistics- roads, quarries, energy centers and woodland caribou. I would have thought someone would ask a question about landfill and incineration in the Great Region of Durham and the impact it might have. Maybe next time.

In thanking the speaker Al Strike so aptly put it by saying, "I am most certain that everyone here now has a better appreciation about and for the environment because of Gord Miller's presentation and remarks. The environment is all inclusive and connected to everything we do. We are amazed and thankful for all of the work you do!"

Ace of Hearts 50/50 Draw

The draw this week was for $700. Dennis "El Presidente" owned the lucky ticket. He failed to draw the Ace of Hearts but did pull an Ace of Diamonds. Remember everyone - Ross always says, "Good luck at getting your ticket pulled next week!"
