Guest Speaker - Dr. Greg Naterer

Dr. Greg Naterer
Dr. Greg Naterer explains how hydrogen can be cheaply produced and used as a fuel

John Craine (L), Dr. Greg Naterer (C), and Tim Funchion (R)

Our guest this week was Greg Naterer, a professor at UOIT with a list of Qualifications that made John Craine stumble when he introduced him.

Greg teaches at UOIT and Durham College in Oshawa and is a noted author, researcher and expert in the field of "hydrogen as a fuel (by capturing energy from other sources) of the future". Greg maintains that research today as well as laboratory models of practical applications of hydrogen as a fuel for trains, planes, buses and cars bears this out! With major players like GM Canada, Toyota, OPG and the Atomic Energy Canada Limited, Greg believes that 10 years down the road, transportation in the Golden Horseshoe will look a lot differently than it does now. ln fact, if all goes well we could be a model for the entire transportation industry on the globe. We all hope this happens.

As the projects and developments unfold some of the positive spin offs include:

* Utilization of spent nuclear fuel rods currently headed for burial in the Canadian Shield

* Cheap clean source of electrical power

* Fuel efficient automobiles, planes, trains and buses

* A state of the art transportation system for crowded GTA

* Creation of another type of manufacturing and industrial revolution

* Reduction in the so-called hot gases that add to global warming - greatly reducing the number of pollutants expelled into our ribbon of atmosphere surounding the earth

Get a load of some of these statistics:

* In the last decade we've gone from emitting 1 cubic km to 90 cubic kms of Carbon Dioxide. Think about how big that is!

* Each day we emit 85 million tonnes of Carbon Dioxide by burning 105 trillion cubic feet of natural gas into the atmosphere

There is an altemative to burning fossil fuels. Water contains hydrogen and oxygen. By developing efficient and economical heat transfer systems we can use hydrogen gas as the fuel of the 21't century. This is a no brainer - so why don't we all get behind this and make it happen. Can you imagine if Rotary and all of the other service clubs got behind Dr. Greg's work what might happen? Why it may be as big an event as the election we're having south of the border or the eradication of polio.

Tim Funchion thanked our speaker for an informative and thought provoking talk. Greg was complimented with a hearty round of applause

Ace of Hearts 50/50 Draw

The draw this week was for $900. Ross Metcalf owned the lucky ticket. He failed to draw the Ace of Diamonds but did pull a 9 of diamonds. "Can you believe that little bugger is back and his ticket gets pulled?" said one unnamed Rotarian to Fred D. To which he replied, "That can't happen if your not here!"

President Denis' Inspirational Quote for the Week

"The last human freedom is to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances" -Victor Frankl was a noted Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist
