Birthdays and Anniversaries

We wish you many more happy birthdays Ted Mann, from all of your friends at Rotary. Interestingly enough Ted is the only Rotarian of record to have been born and married on the same day in Ontario. Talk about good job planning.

Congratulations to Ted and Joyce Mann and Steve and Brenda Jones on the occasion of their wedding anniversaries. All of your friends at Rotary wish you all many more happy years of the same.

Wayne Routly won this week's free breakfast as it was drawn by our guest LCol Brown. No collusion here!

Happy Bucks

Don Hutton got a hole in one and was tickled pink that the traditional "round for everyone in the clubhouse bar" only involved him and his golfing partner. Unfortunately in his elation he started fencing with the scribe and ended up paying a $5 dollar fine for complaining about not receiving his anniversary card - which he did! And Uncle Bob kicked in $10 bucks after he witnessed the $5 dollar squeeze". His comment was "see anyone squeeze a fiver out of Don is worth 10!

Ross publically thanked Judy for providing services above and beyond by being a chauffer during his convalescence.

Our guests this week is LCol Brown, Commander of the Regiment in Oshawa.

The military became part of his life in 1968 when he joined 151 Chadburn Squadron as a cadet. In 1971 he joined the Ontario Regiment. In 1972 he was one of several unit members that deployed with the Royal Canadian Dragoons in Lahr, Germany. He served as a Centurion Gunner for six months of the deployment. In 1975 he was promoted to the rank of sergeant. In 1979 he was promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer. At the end of the year he was presented with the Top troop Leader award, much to the dismay of many of the commissioned officers in the unit. In 1981 he was promoted to the rank of Master warrant Officer, after placing as the Top Candidate in the course. He left the regiment in 1989 to spend more time with his son. During that time he volunteered as Cub leader and Scout troop leader. In 1996 he returned to the regiment and was appointed as Regimental Sergeant Major. He was promoted to Chief warrant Officer. In 1999 he accepted a commission and was promoted to the rank of captain. He was appointed Officer Commanding Headquarters Squadron on his promotion. As a Captain he was appointed to command all three of the regimental squadrons. He was promoted to the rank of Major in 2002. In 2003 he was appointed as Second in Command of the Regiment. In 2007 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and appointed as Commanding Officer.

He is presently employed by Pittsburg Glass (formerly Duplate Canada) and PPG). He is married to Louanne Brown, resides in Port Perry and they have one son Robert.

In his talk to us LCol Brown talked about the origin of Remembrance Day as the commemoration of the end of the "great war on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. From that he mentioned the following:

  • 90th anniversary of the end of the GREAT WAR 1914-1918
  • 65th anniversary of the battle of Altona in which the regiment had a major role
  • 55th anniversary of the end of the Korean War in which there were 600 killed and 1500 wounded
  • The Ontario regiment included 9 companies, 34 battalions of infantry, and the Whitby Highlanders
  • Currently we have 11 soldiers serving in Afghanistan
  • 1939 to 1945 out of 1 million troops 40,000 died and 55,000 wounded
  • LCol talked about his definition of a veteran one having served in an armed conflict
  • Since 2001 Canada has deployed over 21,000 troops and have 96 dead
  • Our troops need to know they are supported. Contact them electronically www.forces.gc.ca with your message - it will be read and is appreciated.
  • What is the price of something that has a high value? I.e. democracy; liberty; peace; freedom to help others.

He ended by saying "Let us not forget".

Thanked by Don Gleed the LCol was thanked with a resounding applause. This was followed by 2 minutes of silence in honour of those had given their lives.
