Great balls of fire charity golf tournament is on September 11, 2009. Sue M has reserved tickets for the 4th Line Theatre. The Tickets at $20 each; the play is on July 30th. The theatre has been so kind as to put aside some room for us to have a pot luck picnic as well. If you plan on attending please inform Sue M ASAP and pay Angie D. We need a webmaster for our Bowmanville Rotary Club web-site. When Lyle comes back he will require assistance. Let Sue McClellan know about any likely candidates. Yard Sale August 15th to raise money for Polio Plus. Have your items there by 7:15am and please make sure they are already priced. There will be a pot luck at Don Hutton's after the sale. Wayne R provided the club with an update on the membership committees "four in the door" campaign. The membership committee will be meeting at Gord W on Aug 4 at 5pm. The certificate that will be handed out to the guest speakers was unveiled. It states that a donation has been made to Polio Plus in their name. The president's walk will be held at CFB Trenton this year. If you could make a donation in U.S. funds that would be greatly appreciated. Dues are STILL due! There are only ten members that have not paid Angie yet. The District convention this year will take place at Blue Mountain in October over three days. The first 10 people to confirm will get $100 towards their stay and if they choose to bring a spouse they will receive an extra $100. |

Paul Morris was the guest speaker on Tuesday to talk to us about cremation. Cremation is a controversial topic, not because of the social or cultural aspect of the practice. Rather the issue is with incineration itself. The practice of cremation is not as eco-friendly as one might think it to be. There are still gas and particles emitted into the air. The most eco-friendly way to be buried would be to be buried in a solid wood casket. That way nature can take it's course. Different cultures have different ways of looking after their dead. Cremation is one way that may cultures use and will travel long distances so that these rituals can be carried out. Last year 54.4% of all the deaths in Ontario were cremated. This shows how popular it is with cultures. Ontario Independent Crematoriums was created to compete with conglomerates that hold a monopoly on the cremation and burial business. Currently there are three independent crematoriums in Ontario. The increase in ethnic populations in Ontario has been a big reason for the increases in cremations. As well, family plots can be established with cremation as up to 4 urns can be buried on top of a casket. This is one way that some families avoid having plots that are separated by long distances in a cemetery. Cremation is not necessarily the only alternative to burial in the traditional sense. As cremation is not as inexpensive as a burial and it is not cleaner. Some alternatives include: Entombment, Nitrogen freeze drying (mostly in Europe) and Alkaline submersion (after this is completed the solution that is left over can be used as fertilizer by farmers). |
