Happy Bucks

Ross M -paid a townie to sound off about how much control women have of men today. Did you know that Ross was planning to park his "arse" at the cottage next weekend and not return until Wednesday? But…oh no wife Judy said "we'' be attending Rotary on Tuesday am so we'll be home Monday night." Then the dwarf sat down.

Don H - slapped down a fiver and read a beautiful thank you note from Community Living in response to the delivery of the new appliances provided by a joint venture of the Vocational and Special Needs Committees. Then he also informed us that he and his regular trio of partners whipped everyone's "arse" at the Hospital Foundation Golf Tournament.

Brett G proudly announced that Lange's finally is open for business downtown. Is he ever happy and so is everyone else!

Wayne R. has been nominated Fisherman of the Month by the Outdoor Society of Pontypool. Wayne announced during his 8 days in Hornepayne that his group of eight caught and released over 1000 pickerel during their ten day excursion. Wayne caught at least two fish that were both over 22 inches (5 to 7 pounds). Fred M was seen salivating and fell out of his chair crying "Why didn't he take me?"

Nancy Reid is back and happy about it! We are too!

Reg F - put down $5 to tell us the saga of his four vehicles, the troubles with them and the detailed interaction of his family, friends, squirrels and various garages and side kicks. In short Reg seems to have spent close to $3,000 in repairs to all four vehicles; considered serious applying physical to some of the aforementioned people or as usual dealt with situation and moved on with his life. Note the list of happenings were as follows -daughter driving car and light came on -$1800; ATV transmission $1250: returning from the annual wood cutting oil light and eventual transmission repair; being passed on the street by a car with a white haired handsome devil hanging out the window yelling the walk will do you good-get in shape.

Ross M (again) came up and suggested we give all of the money collected today to Reg to help him out!

Gord W paid a buck and reminded us again that no one took him up on his bet $100 that Kevin would be pinched first in the club for using his cell while driving. He then went into a long diatribe about not swimming in Fred's pool or refusing to wear an official Rotary thong.

Denis B - echoed everyone's comments about the hospital tournament. He also augmented the info by informing us that $29,000 was raised and the mammography equipment has been approved. This is good news because it is the first step toward the ne Emergency Facilities being constructed.

Rotarians in the Spotlight

Angie D September 25, 2007 and Tim Funchion September 27 2001; "Hats off and thanks to both of you for all of your hard work", says President Sue. "Tim you sure have accomplished a great deal in eight years with our club!"

Introduced by Dr. Ted Mann, Janice Hill spoke to the club on the state of Aboriginal Post Secondary Education. Ted stated "She is well qualified for the job bringing over 25 years of experience as a teacher and Social Activist for Aboriginal Students.

As Dean of Academic Studies Janice's primary objective is to make obtaining an education for aboriginals more accessible; to make it effective, practical and meaningful; to "aboriginalize" the courses and material presented in the curriculum. It was obvious that Janice's passion, enthusiasm and dedication to this end are necessary for it certainly is an onerous task!

Some of the salient points in Janice's presentation included:
· FNTI ( First nations Technical Institute) = sharing and learning
· Mission statement is to provide respectful, holistic learning opportunities and experiences that enhance the capacity of First Nations People to regain control over their social, political cultural and economic future.
· In August 2008 FNTI celebrated its 23rd anniversary of producing quality educational programs to Aboriginal people across Canada
· Since its inception many partnerships have been formed with colleges and universities in Ontario and Saskatchewan; Internationally with the indigenous peoples of Chile, Ecuador and South Africa
· The 60 jobs provided by FNTI in the Quinte Area result in an estimated $6 million contribution to the local economy
· All of the details are provided in the first class package distributed by Janice.

In his closing remarks Doug Park said it well remarking - "the members of our club thank you for an informative and excellent talk to day. Bowmanville Rotary will continue to support aboriginal initiatives in the future."

Keep up the good work and come back and visit again!
