Today's program included Scotia Banks chief economist Dr. Warren Jestin. Dr. Jestin claimed that in order to see where we are going we must first look at where we came from. If we look back 15 months we see the problems in the auto sector were people did not want the products the companies were putting out and those companies began compiling excess stock. In western Canada we saw bidding wars on houses and property. However, our trading partners were falling into a recession. This meant that fewer items were flowing across borders and companies in Canada had to scale back. Cash flow slowed and companies could not afford to keep as much staff and product as they had months prior. The Canadian economy went from full ahead to a full reverse. Jobs became in danger and people began saving money. This had a ripple effect. Housing wars stopped almost immediately and auto dealerships continued to build up product. If we fast forward to today we see the main economic indicators looking towards the positive side. The economy is seeing job creation. However this job creation is not in the same industries that once held the majority of jobs. The Canadian economy is becoming a more service based industry. Job creation has picked up slumping retail sales numbers. As well, retailers are starting to sell off excess stock and massive inventory corrections are occurring. This inventory correction means that retailers have stocked less inventory and this means that this holiday season consumers may want to shop earlier to avoid inventory shortfalls. We are in a phase of good news which actually means less bad news. |

A group of 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders, accompanied by two female teachers, went on a field trip to the local racetrack (Churchill downs) to learn about thoroughbred races horses. When it was time to take the children to the bathroom it was decided that the girls would go with one teacher and the boys would go with the other. The teacher assigned to the boys waited outside the men's room when one of the boys came out and told her that none of them could reach the urinal. Having no choice, she went inside, help the boys with their pants, and began hoisting the little boys up one by one holding onto their "wee wees" to direct the flow. As she lifted one she couldn't help but notice that he was unusually well endowed. Trying not to show that she was staring, the teacher said, "you must be in the 4th grade." "No ma'am," he replied. "I'm the jockey riding Silver Arrow in the seventh." |
